Hospital Bed For The Home - A True Godsend!

A Hospital Bed can be a real lifesaver to a person who has the opportunity to go home rather than remain in a hospital or an extended care facility.  At home, the healing process goes so much more smoothly, because the patient is at home with familiar surroundings such as family, pets, friends and neighbors.  Before the patient is able to return home, there will probably be a case manager or other care provider who will meet with the care giver in the home.  Arrangements will be made for the necessary items, a bed, a bed table, a portable commode, homecare etc.

As a person who has spent eighteen months in a hospital bed, I know how important this bed has been to me and my family.  There are three types of hospital beds: Manual, semi-electric and full electric.  The manual beds are for the cost conscious families, and have manual cranks for the adjustments of the bed.  The semi-electric have electric controls for elevating and lowering the head and feet, but the height of the bed is adjusted by a manual crank.  One has to remember with this manual crank to remember to tuck it back under the bed when finished, or you can really get a bruised shin.  The fully electric bed does all three.

This author first used a 30 inch bed with a small inner spring mattress that was semi-electric.  However, it was decided that due to my weight, a bariatric bed would be a better choice.  I know use a Graham-Field Brand bed, LUMEX (H6520FE).  This bed is fully electric and has med my personal needs quite well.  As I made the transition to more independence, it was much easier to use the electrical bed to adjust the bed so that I could get in and out without assistance.

For those who need the use of a Hospital Bed, rails and other equipment, if you can get a prescription from a doctor, many times your insurance will cover the costs.  Medicare will also cover the costs with the necessary paperwork.  There are other programs that are around to assist in getting hospital beds for those who need them.  No one should ever go without when one is needed.  Best of luck in your recovery process.
